DFG Priority Program "Graphene" - Call for proposals

The DFG has released the call for proposals for the DFG Priority Programme "Graphene". Additional information is also available here.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) decides to install a Priority Program "Graphene".

A proposal to install a Priority Program "Graphene" submitted under the lead management of Dr. Thomas Seyller was evaluated positively by the DFG. On 23. April 2009, the senate of the DFG decided to set up the Priority Program. A call for proposal is expected in the near future. All those interested in the topic are advised to check the web site of the DFG http://www.dfg.de for more information.

Ar atmosphere improves growth of epitaxial graphene on SiC

A recent publication of the group of Th. Seyller in Nature Materials (Emtsev et al., Nature Materials 8 (2009) 203) shows the beneficial influence of an atmosphere of Argon gas on the morphology of graphene layers grown on SiC(0001). The Ar atmosphere slows down Si evaporation, thus enabling a higher growth temperature which leads to a smoother surface morphology. The paper has been hilighted by a News and Views article written by P. Sutter (Nature Materials 8 (2009) 171) and by CompundSemiconductor.NET.

AFM-images of Ar grown graphene AFM images of graphene grown on SiC in a vacuum environment (left) and in Ar atmosphere (right). The dramatic improvement of the surface morphology is clearly seen.
